The Secret Life of Bees

One of my favorite books is "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd. If you haven't read it, I recommend picking up a copy. I would let you borrow mine but it's been out on loan for a couple years now and I'm guessing it's not getting returned. :(

I mention how much I like this book because the movie (based on the book) just came out and I really want to see it. How can it not be good with people like Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson and Alicia Keys?

Has anyone seen the movie? If so, what did you think?

2009 Goals

I have three major goals for this year and to be perfectly honest, I'll be surprised if I accomplish just one of them!

I’m telling you my goals for two reasons. The first reason is to keep you updated on what is happening in my life. The second reason is to put my goals in writing - I will definitely be more accountable and that may be the extra push I need to succeed.

Goal #1 - Run a half marathon in Lincoln, NE - My brother, Aaron, promised he wouldn't be mad if I missed his graduation for a friend's bachelorette party if I ran this race with him. The truth is, I just think he'll be mad if I miss his graduation. He probably couldn't care less. It’s more of a way to make me feel better about missing it. However, I haven’t made up my mind yet. Can you tell I’m having a hard time making this decision?

On a side note, I’ve NEVER run more than 5 miles at one time. Not even during those long three-a-day preseason training sessions for soccer – I think they knew better than to attempt the task of turning soccer players in to long distance runners. So needless to say, running 13 miles is going to be quite the challenge for me if I actually go through with this.

Goal #2 - Take my grad school entrance exam and apply for grad school – This really should be listed as goal #1 because it is by far the most important goal I set for myself this year. I have never been so excited to go to school in my entire life. I’ve always had the need to learn and feel as though I’ve been missing that the past few years since I joined the corporate world. Obviously I learn from on-the-job training but I want to learn more. It’s also a good time for a higher education as there is more competition than ever in the workplace (due to our current economic situation).

Goal #3 – Participate in a duathlon in Bloomington, MN – My friend convinced me to do a duathlon (run 2 miles, bike 20 miles, run 2 miles) with her in September. However, it might be a little hard to do this without a bike…and I don’t have one. So my status on this is pending. I’m scheming up some ideas so I’ll keep you updated.

I also want to do this because I've always been jealous of the people that have the determination and ability to participate in triathlons and marathons. I'm definitely not mentally or physically ready to partake in one of those races, so a duathlon is just fine for me right now. And when I say just fine I mean it's going to take every ounce of my mental and physical ability to complete the race. What am I getting myself in to??

This Is It!

Welcome to my blog! I’ve been doing a lot of social media research for work and decided I should join the tech savvy nation by starting my own blog. Speaking of blog, it surprises me that certain computer programs and e-mail systems still don’t recognize blog as a word. Isn’t that interesting?

I think this will be a good way to show you what’s going on my life and hope that you will share things with me that are happening in your life! I wanted to find an easy way to reach a lot of people since I’m all alone up here in the land of 10,000 lakes - there are actually 11,842 lakes, but who's counting? :)

I’ll try my best to post a few items a week. Enjoy!
